If you have both a private well and a septic system in Massachusetts, you probably have to comply with Title 5 of the State Environmental Code, 310 CMR 15.000. The Massachusetts environmental code regulates how close your drinking water well can be to your septic system. For complete details about Title 5 please visit the MA DEP website.
To verify that sewage from your septic system isn’t seeping into your well water our Standard Title 5 test package includes Total Coliform Bacteria, Ammonia, and Nitrate. Please note, it is important to check with your city or town for local Title 5 requirements.
The drinking water sample must be collected using prepared sample containers. For best results contact the lab to pick up bottles, to have bottles sent to you, or to schedule sampling.
